Day 1 (11/15)
Powell & Market Cable Car Turntable
๐ Crews turn the cable cars around by hand here. The line to board is often long, so come early or walk a few stops up the route and hop on there.
โถ๏ธ๐ก A bit far (2.7km)
Fisherman's Wharf
๐ถ The city's classic touristy waterfront, a short walk from the end of the Powell-Mason cable car line. The sea breeze is cold, so bring a jacket even in summer.
โถ๏ธ๐ข Close by (0.6km)
Pier 39
๐ธ Sea lions gather on the docks on the left side of the pier. Watching them is free, and their numbers change with the season.
โถ๏ธ๐ด Quite far (6.1km)
Golden Gate Bridge
๐ Rent a bike near the wharf and ride the waterfront path to the bridge. Fog is common, so if it's hidden in the morning, try again in the afternoon.
โถ๏ธ๐ด Quite far (5.7km)
Boudin Bakery
๐ฝ๏ธ The wharf branch of the famous sourdough bakery. Clam chowder in a bread bowl is the classic order, and you can watch the bakers through the glass.
โถ๏ธ๐ข Close by (0.8km)
Ghirardelli Square
๐ฝ๏ธ A former chocolate factory turned into a square. Sundaes are the thing to order, and the cable car terminus is close by.
โถ๏ธ๐ก A bit far (2.3km)
Alcatraz Island
๐ซ The former prison island, reached by ferry from Pier 33. Tickets often sell out weeks ahead, so book through the official seller early. Night tours have even fewer spots.
โถ๏ธDay 2 (11/16)
Chinatown
๐ถ Start at the Dragon Gate on Grant Avenue and walk uphill. For a more local feel, step one block over to the markets on Stockton Street.
โถ๏ธ๐ข Close by (0.1km)
Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory
๐ฝ๏ธ A tiny shop in a narrow alley where fortune cookies are still folded by hand. You may be asked to pay a little for photos, so bring some cash.
โถ๏ธ๐ข Close by (0.6km)
North Beach
โ The Italian quarter right next to Chinatown, full of cafes and bakeries, with Washington Square for a rest. The famous pizza places can have long waits.
โถ๏ธDay 3 (11/17)
Lombard Street
๐ธ One zigzagging block lined with flower beds. The Powell-Hyde cable car stops at the top. People live here, so stay on the stairs along both sides.
โถ๏ธ๐ก A bit far (1.1km)
Telegraph Hill
๐ถ A steep hill, so wear comfortable shoes. The Filbert Steps on the east side wind between houses and gardens, and are nicest on the way down.
โถ๏ธ๐ข Close by (0.0km)
Coit Tower
๐ At the top of Telegraph Hill. The murals at the base are free, and the observation deck needs a ticket for the elevator. On clear days you can see the bridge and Alcatraz together.
